"Fine."
The captain realized the orders weren't being revoked and there was a chill that settled upon him. Recalling that he, and his vessel, were to be shot through hyperspace within the hour, the sinking feeling of loneliness made its way out of his memory and into his immediate fears. The reasons behind the orders were not so clear, only that he was "no longer an asset", which he really thought was pointing to the fact that he wasn't one to abide by social norms, fudging the line between uncomfortable truth and consoling lie. The captain just thought it was... rather weird how people seemed so evasive of admitting the way things really were. Two people could know how a situation really was, but as long as they didn't openly acknowledge it, the former was not the reality.
"I hope this side of the omniverse is better off without me, then."
He meant it, but he secretly hoped that they would miss him.
"You do realize you will be dying a hero. You'll have broken at your peak, you lost it as you shined the brightest."
"I guess this *is* the best time to be ejected..."
45 minutes pass and his ship is being positioned for the ejection. He looks at a picture of the past and feels a bit of an emotional knot catch in his chest. "I did have a good run, I guess."
He was quickly shaken out of his reverie and into reality as the command center announced the standard procedure for a Jettison, which there is none:
You receive 3 months worth of supplies.
You are tossed out of the galaxy at the speed of light.
You are not allowed to attempt to return or contact anyone from your past.
Their slingshot powers up. The engines whir to life from a deep C note to a high A#. The captain closes his eyes as he feels the force applied to his ship and he's on his way. Faster and faster the ship accelerates. And just when he thinks he can take no more, the captain sees what is described as the sonic boom of light speed. ~~~
