Our Feet in the Moonlit Tide

about

The ship was ruined.
Most of the valuables on either of the ships were destroyed. The captain and the girl appeared to be completely unscathed. The two looked each other over in disbelief. After a small celebration, they got to sorting out what they could salvage. Seeds of various plants from the girl's ship, a welding laser from the captain's, clothes, blankets, a hatchet, most of the stuff they needed to survive was there.
Upon inspection, they found no sign of human or humanoid life to have ever inhabited the planet. They were alone.
After the captain set up a makeshift camp with a tent and fire, he found it hard to go on. He wandered away from the camp to a small beach near the crash site. He plopped down and let the water flow over his legs. It was relaxing. It seemed to wash away the reality that he would probably never see anyone he knew again. He looked into the sunset. It was even more colorful than that of his home. He watched as the sun fell under the horizon and noticed the incredibly clear night sky.
The girl soon sat down beside him. Her legs gleamed as the water washed over them. "You shouldn't let it get to you so much, you know?"

"I don't think I can help it."

"That's my point, and even if you could, I think you would need to ask yourself if you should. I mean, would you really want to? Think about it: even though we may be stuck here forever, we have achieved the basic principle of the ultimate freedom; we can do what we *want*."

"What if I don't know what I want?"

"Ohh, I'm sure I could help you figure it out eventually..." She lifted her leg in the air, pretending the action was nonchalant. "Besides, life's a trap, we weren't going to get out alive, regardless. This is just more defined than what everyone else has to see. It's a more abrasive reality."

There was a long pause. The captain let it sink in. The whole thing was like a Calculus problem. So many things canceled out. People get so caught in the now that they lose sight of the past and future.

The captain stood up with a flat rock in his hand, positioning the contours to fit his index finger and rest on his middle finger distractedly. After observing the reflection of the bright full moon in the water with his face distorted by the waves, he looked at the girl. "Have you ever skipped stones?"

"I wish."

He tossed it and they both watched as it skipped 18 times.
"Not to brag, but if you need lessons, you're stuck with a pro for a solid chunk of time."

She jumped into position to be taught the form.
"I'm game."
